In a momentous event that echoes through Cebu’s rich faith, culture, and history, the long-lost pulpit panels of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio de Maria Santisima in Boljoon were officially returned to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cebu by the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP).
The historic turnover ceremony at the Cebu Cathedral Museum on March 13 gathered together prominent personalities, including Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, and NMP Chairman Andoni Aboitiz.
For decades, these sacred panels, lost in the 1980s, were thought to be gone forever. Now, they have returned to their rightful owner, the Archdiocese of Cebu — marking a significant chapter in the preservation of Boljoon’s rich history.
During the ceremony, the panels, adorned with intricate carvings of Augustinian saints, were presented one by one to Archbishop Palma and were mounted on easels for public viewing.
A wood specimen from each panel was extracted for radiocarbon dating, ensuring their authenticity and confirming that they are the original pieces lost from Boljoon Church.
Governor Garcia expressed her deep pride in the moment, stating, “The truth explodes with clarity. Ownership should never be questioned. You have always belonged to the Archdiocese of Cebu physically, emotionally, psychologically, and heartily.”
Secretary Frasco declared, “Today is a triumph of faith, heritage, and history,” highlighting the significance of the event for Cebu’s cultural legacy.
In addition to the excitement, the extraction of 20-gram wood samples from each panel for carbon dating was conducted, with results expected within two weeks. The Cebu Provincial Government will cover the costs of this important procedure.
Archbishop Palma expressed his gratitude to Governor Garcia for her tireless efforts in lobbying for the repatriation of the panels.
“I am really thankful to our dear Governor Gwen for giving so much effort to bring back the panels here in Cebu,” Archbishop Palma said.
Boljoon Mayor Jojie Derama also expressed his heartfelt appreciation for Governor Garcia’s determination in standing for the people, saying, “Salamat kaayo Governor Gwen kay imo kaming gilabanan sa among heritage and culture.”
Even Second District Congressman Edcel Galleos emotionally thanked the Governor, stating, “Gov, salamat kaayo nga nauli gyud ning tanan. Nasayod gyud mi og giunsa ni nimo.”
On March 14, the panels will be brought to Boljoon for public viewing. On March 21, a Pontifical Mass will be held, during which Archbishop Palma will preach from the pulpit, showcasing the beauty of the restored panels. | JMT
