Jails in the Province of Cebu under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology may soon be joining Capitol’s Sugbusog vegetable gardening program.
Jail Chief Superintendent Neil Avisado, director of the BJMP-7, expressed to Gov. Gwen Garcia his intent for jails in Cebu under his supervision to also include gardening in the activities of persons deprived of liberty committed to their facilities.
“Gusto din namin sumali sa programa ninyo na Sugbusog kasi may mga tanim din yung mga maliliit namin na garden dun sa facility namin,” Avisado said during the governor’s meeting with regional and provincial officials of at least 60 national line agencies at the Capitol on Wednesday, April 26.
Sugbusog is the Capitol’s backyard gardening initiative that helped Cebuanos put nutritious food on the table during the hard lockdowns of the pandemic. In time, it has grown to be a competition participated by LGUs, police stations, public schools, and Capitol-run hospitals.
Avisado said with the program, he hopes to motivate the PDLs to continue growing the garden which could also be a source of healthy food options for their daily consumption. | Ulrika R. Wagas
