The Municipality of Catmon Women’s Team does it again — for a third time in a row — chalking up an impressive three-peat in the women’s category of the Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup or GUV CUP.
This time, only Cebu City stood between Catmon and the championship, and it seemed the northern Cebu LGU experienced jitters before with the vaunted Queen City of the South.
They dropped the first set before the overwhelming force of Cebu City, recording a dismal 25-17 loss.
And yet one can never underestimate the heart of a champion — especially a perennial champion at that — as Catmon recorded three consecutive set victories en route to the championship (28-26; 27-25; and 25-13).
Wellamel Lim led Catmon and she was rewarded with the MVP trophy.
Catmon’s GUV CUP championship streak began in 2019 when Gov. Gwen returned to office at the Capitol.
The years 2020 and 2021 were disrupted by the pandemic and so the province-wide tournament was cancelled.
When it resumed in 2022, Catmon successfully defended its title; and completed a three-peat for the tournament’s 11th season, which was launched last year. | Babie Jane Revecoy
