Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo Lumagui, Jr. paid Gov. Gwen Garcia a courtesy visit at the Capitol on Thursday, July 11.
The BIR chief is in Cebu for the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants Conference held at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. He is accompanied by BIR 7 Regional Director Douglas Rufino and BIR 8-A Assistant Regional Director Dante Tan.
During their meeting, Commissioner Lumagui commended Gov. Gwen’s initiatives, particularly in tourism and the Capitol assistance in duly registering canyoneering operators in Badian and Alegria with the BIR.
It can be recalled that in June last year, Gov. Gwen revoked the Governor’s Permits issued to canyoneering operators in Badian whose businesses are not registered with the BIR for withholding taxes from the government despite their hundreds of millions of pesos in annual income.
Lumagui expressed hope that other provinces could replicate Cebu’s initiatives and assured the Governor of the support his agency can extend, especially on questions on the taxability of some proprietary activities of the LGUs.
“Kung sa tingin ng ating mga mambabatas at ng Kongreso na kinakailangan gawin ito para makatulong sa mga probinsiya at mga local government units na mas magkaroon ng mga pundo, then of course the BIR is here to support all the initiatives of our Governor,” Commissioner Lumagui told 𝐒𝐮𝐠𝐛𝐨𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬.
Gov. Gwen also extended an invitation to the BIR officials to the much-anticipated Capitol programs, including Suroy-Suroy Sugbo: The Best of the West over the weekend and the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo Festival of Festivals next month. | BJR
