COMPOSTELA, CEBU — President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. led the inauguration, ribbon-cutting ceremony, and ceremonial start-up of industrial machines at the Compostela Works, Steel Asia Manufacturing Corporation’s (SAMC) newest, largest, and most modern steel mill facility in the country on Tuesday, July 9.
He was joined by Gov. Gwen Garcia and Compostela Mayor Felijur Quiño, as well as SAMC executives, led by their chairman and CEO Benjamin Yao. Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo Pascual and Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs Secretary Frederick Go were also present in this important event.
“Steel is the backbone of many industries. Many industries depend on steel for their further development,” Pres. Marcos said in his speech.
“We are now in the era of Bagong Pilipinas: a nation full of high hopes, an economy that promises a bright future, and the people driven by the burning passion to excel to succeed. Just like steel, we Filipinos are innately strong, resilient and indomitable,” the President added. Compostela Works has an annual production capacity of 1,000,000 tons of rebar. With the combined production of its 7 mills in the country, with one located in Carcar City, SAMC’s total production capacity now exceeds 3 million tons as it serves 70% of the rebars need in the country.
It sits on a 25-hectare site in Brgy. Poblacion and employs over 300 local workers. It is expected to generate at least 1,500 jobs around the community.
Gov. Garcia thanked SAMC leadership for their continued trust and confidence in Cebu by doubling down on their investments here.
“By deciding to put your faith in Cebu, to believe in the business environment that we have created for the private sector, for business to flourish, daghan kaayong salamat sa imong pagtuo sa Sugbo ug mga Sugboanon,” Gov. Garcia told her old friend Benjamin Yao in her speech.
The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including a modern rebar rolling line, high-speed production capabilities, and advanced quality control systems to ensure the production of high-grade steel products. | BJR
