Since the beginning of the rainy season and the desilting activities in Mananga and Lusaran rivers, the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) reported an improved production capacity.
In a meeting on Tuesday with Gov. Gwen Garcia, MCWD reported that as of June 7, MCWD’s production deficit has quite improved to 60,474 cubic meters from 69,036 cubic meters in June 3, producing about 250,526 cubic meters in total output for that day alone.
The June 7 daily output was an increase from 241,964 cubic meters recorded in June 3.
Gov. Garcia met with officials of the water district and other stakeholders who has taken part in the desilting of Lusaran River in Cebu City and Mananga River in Talisay City.
Earlier, Gov. Garcia led the initiative aimed to enhance the water flow of the rivers and thus supply more to MCWD.
She expressed satisfaction with the progress observed since the desilting process began.
Despite the notable progress, Gov. Garcia emphasized the need for continued efforts. She instructed the contractors to persist in removing obstructions along the rivers, ensuring that water from the sources can flow freely. This work is to continue even as the rainy season has officially begun.
The governor highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating that they are crucial for maintaining a stable water supply, especially in preparation for potential droughts or El Niño conditions in the future.
“We must continue this effort to ensure that Cebu remains resilient against water shortages in the future,” she said.
This increase is a significant boost to the water supply for Metro Cebu, even as MCWD has yet to return to its normal production of water pre-El Niño.
The governor’s proactive approach and her collaborative efforts with key stakeholders underscore her commitment to securing a reliable water source for Cebu’s future needs.
