Officials of the Visayan Electric Company (VECO) assured Gov. Gwen Garcia that they will do all they can to fix immediately the punctured cable line of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The damage to NCGP line resulted in two brief power outages in Mactan island, affecting Lapu-Lapu City and the Municipality of Cordova.
VECO President Engr. Raul Lucero assured Governor Gwen Garcia that the company will take full responsibility for repairing the punctured cable and ensuring that consumers do not experience any power interruptions moving forward.
In the event of a power shortage, Engr. Lucero said a private power plant, East Asia Power Plant, can pick up the load and ensure uninterrupted power supply for Mactan Island.
“Wala gyoy mahitabo nga power shortage sa Mactan kay naa man pod nakatabang nato, ang East Asia Power Plant,” Engr. Lucero said.
On April 29, an excavation work conducted by VECO near Wilcon Depot along UN Avenue in Mandaue City resulted in the puncturing of NGCP’s power cable line 2. The said line supplies power to Mactan Island with a capacity of 180 megawatts.
While repairs and splicing works to fix the cable line shall commence, East Asia Power Plant will operate as an alternative power source to stabilize power supply in the island.
A similar incident occurred last year during an excavation work conducted by the Department of Public Works and Highways along Ouano and UN Avenue in Mandaue City.
NGCP officials, including operations and maintenance regional department head Ronald Romero, were also present at the meeting. | MARM
