Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan has sought the help of Gov. Gwen Garcia in finding a solution to a “minor setback” that is being encountered by the city’s 12-km Lapu-Lapu Expressway (LLEX) project.
During a meeting at the Capitol on Wednesday, October 11, the mayor told the governor that a section of the LLEX alignment would hit a portion — about six meters — of the service road leading to the airport and under the maintenance of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA).
Gov. Garcia, who is a member of the Board of Directors of MCIAA, told the mayor that she would bring the matter up at their next board meeting. MCIAA is in charge of operating and maintaining the Mactan Cebu International Airport, as well as in crafting and implementing airport rules and regulations.
LLEX is a P24.8 billion infrastructure facility implemented through private-public partnership (PPP) scheme between the LLEX Corp. and the city government.
The road network aims to establish a two- to four-lane toll expressway from the end of the CCLEX in the Municipality of Cordova to the MCIA Terminal Building Access Road. It also aims to improve intra-island access, decrease travel time between various origin-destination points on Mactan Island, and reduce traffic congestion on its main thoroughfares.
Mayor Chan was elated at the governor’s commitment, saying that the project will be to the benefit of everyone by reducing traffic congestion in the city and expediting travel time to and from the airport.
Also present during the meeting was Francis Chua, the CEO and President of Premium Megastructures Inc., a proponent of the LLEX project. | Babie Jane Revecoy
