Gov. Gwen Garcia and Mayor Cesar Suan welcomed Senate President Migz Zubiri and Senator Risa Hontiveros into the country’s first and biggest desalination plant which is located in Cordova, Cebu.
Isla Mactan Cordova Corp.’s Cordova Desalination Plant, which is now 70% complete, is due for completion in December this year.
It can produce up to 20 million liters of potable water daily which is expandable to 50 million liters, helping address Metro Cebu’s growing water scarcity problem.
The two senators praised IMCC, a subsidiary of Vivant Corp., for its commitment to pouring billions of pesos in capital in an enterprise that looks out for a very basic human need which is water.
The plant uses state-of-the-art seawater reverse osmosis technology which removes salt and other minerals from seawater, making it suitable for drinking, domestic, and commercial use.
Gov. Garcia said the facility, aside from harnessing nature’s seldom-tapped resource for potable water, also brings economic gains and benefits for Cordova and the entire One Cebu Island.
The desalination plant is a product of public-private partnership under the build-operate-transfer scheme.
IMCC will transfer to the Municipality of Cordova the ownership rights to the facility after 25 years of operation, thereby augmenting the LGU’s high-value assets.
The plant is situated in Barangays Poblacion, Buagsong and Catarman, occupying an estimated 3.5-hectare property provided by the local government unit. | Babie Jane Revecoy
