A united one island of Cebu highlighted the opening of the trade exhibit aptly dubbed “One Cebu Island Expo”.
For the first time since it was revived in 2019, the three independent cities of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu joined as exhibitors where officials described it as unity among the local government units in Cebu Island.
"This One Cebu Island Expo showcases the unique unity that we have achieved on this entire island,” Gov. Garcia said in her speech.
One Cebu Expo is the brainchild of Gov. Garcia launched during her second term in 2008, where it showcases the homegrown products including handwoven fabrics, export-quality furniture and accessories as well as the famous lechon.
In her speech, Gov. Gwen Garcia said that the One Cebu expo this year is a showcase of how the island recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and the devastation from typhoon Odette in 2021.
"Because we are united, we are strong. Very very strong. So don't mess with us," Garcia said. "Do not test this unity because it is a formidable one. And it is ready to show as it is now showing how formidably united we are with all of the products on display."
"Indeed what a journey this has been but the journey continues, fasten your seatbelt because I see up ahead great heights, even greater achievements for this wonderful, unique and special one Cebu island, the best is yet to come."
Products on display at the Mountain Wing Atrium SM Seaside City Cebu include the handwoven Argao Hablon as well as banig or woven mats from Badian and San Francisco.
Varieties of Cebu lechon from both Carcar City and Talisay City are also showcased giving visitors an option as to which one is more tastier.
Native bags and furniture from Sogod town and coconut fabric from Pinamungajan is also a favorite among displays.
Cebu's only homegrown coffee from Tuburan town also set up its own booth.
Lapu-Lapu City featured its shellcrafts and its local martial arts, arnis, which is believed to have been practiced during the time of Datu Lapulapu.
Tourist spots including whaleshark watching in Oslob, canyoneering in Alegria and Badian, as well as sardine run and diving in Moalboal are also favorites of guests.
On the same day, 43 beautiful contestants for Pasigarbo sa Sugbo Festival Queen were introduced to the public.
Joining the governor were senior vice president of SM Prime Holdings, Inc. Marissa Fernan and Honorary Consul to Belgium Enrison Benedicto, who is the chairman of the One Cebu Expo, 3rd District Congressman PJ Garcia, Cebu Provincial Board Members, Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Garcia, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan, and mayors of Cebu province also showed their support.
