Resort owners of illegal structures built within the defined easement zone of Looc River in Ginatilan asked the Capitol that they be allowed to do the demolition themselves so they can make use of what can still be salvaged from the ruin.
This was relayed by Jennifer Singco of Green Villas Resort and Pedro Cabonillas of Fern Valley Cold Spring Resort when they met with Gov. Gwen Garcia at the Capitol on Monday, July 3.
Last month, Gov. Gwen issued Executive Order Number 15 Series of 2023 ordering the two mountain establishments to stop operations until further notice, and for the demolition of man-made barriers they constructed within the defined 20-meter easement zone of the river.
The Capitol has intervened in the issue after the municipal council of southern Cebu town has formally endorsed the matter to the governor’s attention, asking the Capitol’s assistance in its resolution.
These man-made barriers have posed a two-fold problem to neighboring communities as it restrict the free flow of water and cause water shortage during warm days and pose risk of flooding during rainy days.
A survey will be conducted by DENR, PENRO, and resort owners to determine the extent of the violation before proceeding with the clearing operation.
CPPO chief Pol Col Rommel Ochave, who was asked by the governor for assistance in the implementation of the demolition order, was also present during the meeting; as well as provincial legal officer Atty. Donato Villa and PENRO chief Rodel Bontuyan. | Babie Jane Revecoy
