The Capitol will assist Toledo City in desilting Buswang River to prevent risks of flooding and other potential mishaps especially that rainy season is finally here.
Mayor Marjorie “Joie” Perales led a delegation of Toledo City department heads in meeting Gov. Gwen Garcia on Friday, June 23, reporting to her about the direness of the situation in Buswang River located in Brgy. Cambang-ug.
Because of the urgency of the situation, Gov. Garcia ordered that desilting in the area should begin immediately on the following day with the help of a private contractor in RCV Construction.
Engr. Dennis Abella, CDRRMO chief, said the depth of the river has been greatly reduced by strong typhoons in the past such as Odette in 2021 and Agaton in 2022. They eroded from the mountains rocks, sand, gravel, and other sediments that are now resting on the shallow river beds.
This, the CDRRMO chief said, would make the river overflow easily when rains begin to pour, posing danger to lives and properties of communities living near the river banks.
The governor will be closely monitoring the situation, expecting updates from Toledo City officials in the coming days. | Baby Jane Revecoy
