Driven by the desire to counter the negative connotation associated with government hospitals, Governor Gwen Garcia’s monitoring initiative proved to be a success with the vast improvements seen in the third round.
The governor met with the Chief of Hospitals at the Capitol on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, to discuss the results of the Cebu Provincial Hospital Monitoring program, which aimed to motivate and improve the services of the Capitol-operated provincial and district hospitals across the province.
The evaluation team, led by Doctor Mary Jean Loreche, assessed 4 provincial hospitals and 14 district hospitals based on several criteria, including management and leadership, client satisfaction, processes and systems, infrastructure, and economic enterprise.
Following the monitoring, the team announced the "Hall of Famers" - those hospitals that scored the highest and showcased significant improvements.
One of the top-ranking hospitals was the Cebu Provincial Hospital in the Municipality of Balamban.
The hospital's excellent ranking has allowed it to apply to become a Level II hospital.
Dr. Olivia Dandan, the head of Balamban Hospital, credited their success to the cooperative teamwork at the facility.
She expressed their dedication to maintaining the quality of services and ensuring their patients' confidence in returning when needed.
Meanwhile, Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City was recognized as the "Most Improved" hospital after showcasing remarkable progress since the previous monitoring.
In the past, Danao Provincial Hospital faced challenges such as cracked floors, an unorganized emergency room, and subpar meals.
However, the hospital, now headed by Dr. Jenina Canoy, stepped up its game in this second round of evaluation, with new and improved structures, well-maintained facilities, and the establishment of a hemodialysis center.
They also have ongoing construction for an extension building.
During an interview, Dr. Mary Jean Loreche expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the monitoring program.
She highlighted the significance of addressing gaps in the healthcare system, not only for pandemic preparedness but also to provide excellent services to the people.
"I just wanna say this loud and clear. The Province of Cebu has one of the best healthcare systems in place," Dr. Loreche exclaimed as she witnessed the hospitals' impressive improvements throughout the monitoring and evaluation program.
Gov. Gwen commended the efforts of the hospitals and expressed her gratitude to the volunteers who served as evaluators.
She plans to institutionalize the monitoring program on a regular basis and even turn it into a competition to drive hospitals to maintain and further improve their services.
With the commitment of Cebu's healthcare institutions and the support of the provincial government, the healthcare system in Cebu is set to reach new heights, ensuring quality and reliable medical services for its residents. | Ulrika R. Wagas
