It is unusual to perform a dance with death as a theme in a festive event like Sinulog. But, Talisay City took the risk and came out as champion in the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan held at the Cebu City Sports Center in Cebu City last Saturday, Jan. 12.
Talisay City Central Elementary School was awarded as the grand winner for the ritual showdown, besting four other contingents. The group received P350,000.
The contingent was also the winner for best in musicality and best in street dancing.
The concept of the group’s performance was praying for the eternal rest of a dead man’s soul.
Tombs as backdrop, a coffin and large funeral wreaths were among of the props of the group.
At start of the dance, the 100 dancers first donned a violet-colored costume. While dancing, their wardrobe switched to gray and then to blue.
Marvey Caño, head choreographer of Talisay, in a report said the performance was a tribute to his assistant choreographer who died last year and to commemorate the latter’s first death anniversary.
Last year, the Talisay contingent also won the grand prize in the ritual showdown.
Other winners in the ritual showdown were Carcar City Division (second place), Tribu Malipayon of Consolacion (third place), Sining Sto. Niño Folkloric Troupe of the City of Bogo (fourth place) and Tribu Ginatilan (fifth place).
Carcar also won the best in costume.
Bogo Mayor Carlo Jose Martinez and Vice Mayor Ma. Cielo Martinez brought the banner of their team before the performance of their contingent.
Carcar bagged the second prize in best in musicality which was followed by Consolacion, Bogo and Ginatilan.
For the street dancing, the second and third places went to Carcar and Consolacion, respectively.
