More than 20,000 workers from Cebu’s 1,066 barangays will now be covered against daily work hazards following the recent approval of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) on the life and accident insurance.
Provincial Board Member Jose Mari “Tata” Salvador, who authored the resolution, said that barangay tanods, health workers and nutrition scholars are initially covered under this protection program amounting to P6 million with Fortune Life Insurance Company Inc.
Cebu Gov. Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes A. Magpale recognized the barangay volunteers for their commendable assistance in delivering the basic services of the Provincial Government, through the Capitol’s annual cash incentives program.
Salvador said there are 27,300 barangay tanods, health workers and nutrition scholars all over the province who are exposed to the daily work risk, such as accident and death.
Aside from the meager honorarium, the community volunteers are also prone to work travel without sufficient protection, said Salvador who is also the current chairperson of the health committee.
“Importante gyud nga ma insured ang mga frontliners sa baranggay kay sila man ang mosuroy sa mga kabarangayan ug nabutang man sila sa risgo. Sama sa mapaakan og iro o maligsan,” Salvador said.
Under the coverage, the barangay frontliners will receive P25,000 in case of death, while P2,500 in cases of accident.
Salvador said the council is now eyeing to provide insurance coverage to all barangay workers but this would depend on the availability of funds of the Provincial Government.
