Cebu Gov. Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes A. Magpale have their hands full distributing the annual cash assistance for barangay workers in Cebu’s southern part on Feb. 19 to 22.
At least P9.805 million in cash incentives were distributed to 5,281 barangay workers in the cities of Naga and Talisay and in the towns of Alegria, Malabuyoc, Oslob, Boljoon, Alcoy, Moalboal, Badian, and Minglanilla.
The beneficiaries are barangay health workers (BHWs), barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), animal health aide (AHA), daycare workers (DCW), barangay tanods and lupon tagapamayapa.
The series of activities last week, as well as the upcoming scheduled distribution of cash incentives, ran contrary to rumors that the program has been stopped by the Cebu Provincial Government.
Both Davide and Magpale described these as “fake news.”
Davide said that the distribution of cash incentives for 2018 started in Dec. 1 in the province’s island communities.
“Tsismis na nga giundang. Dili na tinuod. Dako nang bakak,” the governor pointed out in his speech during the distribution activity in the City of Naga last Feb. 21.
Instead, Magpale announced that the Province will be increasing the barangay workers’ cash incentives starting this year, which delighted the beneficiaries.
On Feb. 19, Davide and Magpale were in the towns of Alegria and Malabuyoc to distribute at least P1.595 million in cash incentives to 420 barangay workers.
There were 412 workers from the 10 barangays of Alegria that benefited the program, while 408 workers from the 14 barangays of Malabuyoc received their incentives.
The following day, Feb. 20, Davide and Magpale were in the towns of Oslob, Boljoon and Alcoy to deliver the cash incentives amounting to P1.6 million to the 889 barangay workers.
Aside from the distribution of cash gifts, Davide and Magpale also distributed agriculture machineries in Oslob and 20 solar lamp posts in Boljoon with a total worth of P895,000.
Joining the top Capitol officials in the distribution were Cebu’s Second District Rep. Wilfredo Caminero and Provincial Board Member Tata Salvador, as well as officials of the three towns.
On Feb. 21, a total of 2,511 barangay health workers received their incentives in different distribution areas in the City of Naga, Minglanilla and in Talisay City.
A total of P4.723 million were distributed, with P1.9 million given to the 1,007 barangay workers in Naga, P1.2 million to the 655 barangay workers in Naga, and P1.5 million to Talisay’s barangay workers.
Minda Ubay, a councilwoman of Naga’s Barangay South Poblacion and BHW president, confirmed that she heard about the rumor. However, she assured the BHWs in Naga that it is not true as she regularly communicates with the Capitol. She said she was surprised where such talks came from because the information that she got from the Capitol was about the plan to even increase their incentives.
“Ako, nakadungog ko. Di na tinuod,” she said.
Ubay said the incentives that BHWs and other barangay workers are getting from the Capitol are very helpful to them.
“Dako’g ikatabang ni sa BHWs. Gihandum gyud ni,” Ubay said.
All BHWs, BNS and DCWs received P2,400 each, while tanods and lupons each got P1,500.
Magpale and Davide ended the week with the distribution of P1.887 million cash assistance in Badian and Moalboal, serving 1,061 barangay workers from both towns.
