A robust finish during the recently-concluded Batang Pinoy 2017 Visayas Qualifying Leg doesn’t stop players of Cebu Province to poise for another level as they fixed training for the national meet set early next year.
Cebu Province, with 208 delegates in the week-long Visayas leg recently held in Dumaguete City, bagged third place with 39 gold medals, 37 silvers and 44 bronzes.
Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) executive director Ramil Abing said the performance of the Province is fascinating. The support of Governor Hilario P. Davide III also added the best ingredient as they upset their rep in this year’s tourney.
The coaches, Abing said, engaged a crucial role in the infield prompting the team to bag a total of 120 medals. He said he will ask the coaches to roll-out early training for the players in time for the Batang Pinoy National Championships to be held in February 2018.
Abing added that an incentive for the winners will be sought by his office.
The qualifying level in Dumaguete City for athletes ages 15 below was organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). Over 53 local government units or around 2,500 participants competed in 19 sporting events.
PSC Commissioner Celia Kiram cited the importance of the Batang Pinoy event as it is in line with the government’s thrust to strengthen sports awareness and participation in the grassroots level.
The different sporting events include Archery, Arnis, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Chess, Dancesport, Karatedo, Tennis, Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball and Beach Volleyball.
The delegation from Cebu City bagged first place with 46-59-69 (gold-silver-bronze), while Dumaguete City got the second spot with 41-29-44. After Cebu Province on third place, Bacolod City follows in fourth place with 36-26-29 and Iloilo City on fifth place with 31-19-23.
