Cebu Provincial Traffic Management focal person Jonathan “Joy” Tumulak said motorists can expect a vehicle convergence that will last for a maximum of three hours in southern Cebu this Holy Week, as towns observe religious rites on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
During the special episode of Kasayuran sa Kalambuan media forum on Monday, April 15, Tumulak said that the town of Minglanilla will observe its annual Sugat Kabanhawan Festival on Sunday, while San Fernando town will hold a solemn foot procession on Friday.
Minglanilla is known as the Sugat Capital of the south, highly expected by both local and foreign spectators every year. This festival is held on the dawn of Easter Sunday and a festival parade during the afternoon.
Contingents of the Kabanhawan mardi gras will gather at Anjos World at 2 p.m. Tumulak said the local government of Minglanilla will close the stretch from Barangay Calajuan crossing up to the road going to its municipal complex and the new public market. The road closure will start at 4 p.m., said Tumulak.
He added that the festival will run for two hours.
Tumulak assured motorists that traffic managers will lift the road closure immediately after the event.
“Paningkamutan nila nga masayo nila og human. Gipasalig sab nila nga ablihan dayun ang dalan human sa kalihukan,” said Tumulak.
Southbound or northbound motorists can take the diversion road in Barangay Tungkop going to Tulay then proceed to Barangay Calajuan all the way to the national highway.
However, Tumulak said this alternative route has a dimension of 8-10 meters wide where large vehicle can slow down the traffic in the two-lane stretch.
San Fernando Foot Procession
On Good Friday, Tumulak said, San Fernando town will hold a religious procession of saints after a 5 p.m. mass in San Isidro Parish church.
Tumulak said that with the foot procession, the whole stretch of the national highway in San Fernando will be closed to motorists. The procession will last for two to three hours, he said.
Tumulak reminds motorists that there will be a large number of devotees who will join the procession in San Fernando.
“Kadtung gidaghanon sa participants last year, ka upat pil-on this coming Friday,” he said.
He urged motorists to travel early or avoid the area within the said hours.
Tumulak added that the same religious procession will also be held in the towns of Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela and Danao City.
However, these towns will only use one lane of the road for the activity and will not directly affect the traffic considering that the road has four-lanes, Tumulak said.
On April 28, the seaside portion of N. Bacalso Ave. in Naga City, Cebu will be closed from 5 a.m. up to 12 noon to make way for the qualifying rounds of the Ironman triathlon dubbed as 5150 Triathlon.
He said the tournament will start from Barangay Tinaan up to Barangay Inayagan.
