A total of 10,026 senior citizens in Mandaue City and in Consolacion town received in-kind gifts from the Cebu Provincial Government as part of the Capitol’s program for the elderly.
The Provincial Government came up with this program entitled, Halad sa Gugma Alang Kang Lolo ug Lola, as one way to recognize the senior citizens’ valuable contributions to the community.
Gov. Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes A. Magpale led the distribution of the food packs and hygiene kits in Mandaue and Consolacion.
Last March 7, the two top Capitol executives distributed the goodies to the 4,223 senior citizens of Barangays Looc, Cambaro, Ibabao-Estancia, Alang-alang, Mantuyong and Guizo.
This is the second time that both officials came to the city to conduct such a program this year.
Magpale said that she and the governor always made sure to lead the distribution of the food packs and hygiene kits to the different local government units because they want to personally meet the senior citizens.
“Wala kami gipili. Tanang mga senior citizens, tanan nga motongtong nga saysenta anyos matagaan gayud… Angay lang ang gobyerno magpasalamat kaninyo kay kung wala kamo wala sad ang atong mga kabataan,” she said.
She encouraged the senior citizens to avail themselves of the various Capitol programs, such as the free hearing aid, by having their names listed at the Vice Governor’s Office.
Mandaue Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing was thankful to Davide and Magpale for the gifts they brought for the senior citizens.
“Nalipay gyud mi naay programa ang Probinsya sa Sugbo nga pinangulohan ni Vice Gov. Magpale para sa mga senior citizens… Ang program ni Vice Gov. Magpale klaro kaayo nga atong gipangga ang senior citizens,” he said.
The mayor also took the opportunity to announce the increase of the City’s financial assistance for the senior citizens from P6,000 to P8,000 this year. He said the first tranche will be given in April.
The barangay captains of the different villages where present during the distribution activities.
In Consolacion, Davide and Magpale distributed food packs and hygiene kits to a total of 5,803 beneficiaries from the town’s 21 barangays last March 2.
The Capitol officials were joined by Consolacion Vice Mayor Aurelio Damole and some barangay officials.
In his speech, Davide said that the Halad sa Gugma program has been existing since 2013. The governor assured that this program and the rest of the other Capitol programs for women, farmers, fisherfolks, among others will continue.
“Makaingon kita tingali diri sa Consolacion wa kita magkulang sa atong pagpangalangad…Hinaot nalipay kamo niini. Ginagmay lamang kini apan kinasingkasing nga paghatag sa Cebu Provincial Government,” said Davide.
Magpale said Consolacion is among the municipalities that received numerous projects from the Capitol.
“Usa sa mga lungsod nga daghan kaayo’g nabubo ang administrasyon ni Gov. Davide, dinhi sa Consolacion,” she said.
Consolacion Association of Barangay Councils President Wesley Alimorin said the food packs and hygiene kits are a big help to the seniors as some of them no longer have the means to provide for themselves or have been abandoned by their children.
“Bisag ginagmay ang tabang sa Probinsya lipay na gyud na sila,” he said.
