Gov. Pamela Baricuatro is moving to make her priority program of strengthening Cebu’s healthcare services more sustainable by offering scholarship grants to aspiring doctors who are willing to serve Cebuanos in the province’s public hospitals.

As part of this initiative, the Cebu Provincial Government, through Piso Public Health Consultant Dr. Elisse Nicole “Nikki” Catalan, is working on a scholarship program for medical students in partnership with the Cebu Normal University–Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center College of Medicine (CNU-VSMMC COM).

Dr. Catalan, together with Provincial Board Member Dr. Stanley Caminero, chair of the committee on public health, recently met with officials of the Cebu Normal University–Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center College of Medicine (CNU-VSMMC COM) to agree in principle on the provisions of an agreement to be executed between the Province of Cebu and the medical school. The agreement will pave the way for scholarship assistance to deserving medical students who aspire to become doctors and serve in Capitol-run provincial and district hospitals.

The scholarship grant aims to help qualified students achieve their dream of becoming physicians in exchange for a commitment to serve Cebuanos, particularly in government health facilities. The program is also intended to address the growing need for medical professionals not only in Capitol-managed hospitals but across the entire province.

Gov. Baricuatro has repeatedly stressed that a healthy and progressive Cebu should not suffer from a shortage of doctors and healthcare workers, especially in far-flung and underserved communities.

During the meeting, officials of CNU-VSMMC COM assured Dr. Catalan of the quality of education and training provided by the medical school, noting that it is a collaborative effort between two leading institutions in education and healthcare, not only in Central Visayas but in the country.

Dr. Catalan emphasized that funding medical education is a direct investment in the future of public health in Cebu.

Through the scholarship program, the provincial government expects more Cebuanos to benefit in the long term from efficient, accessible, and high-quality healthcare services throughout the province. | CAPITOL PIO
