Bantayan District Hospital (BDH) successfully performed major surgical procedures yesterday, Jan. 31, following the expansion of the Sugbo Bagong Urgent Care and Ambulatory Services Centers (SugBUCAS) program to the island facility.

The procedures included two cases of marsupialization and one inguinal hernia repair.

Last week, Gov. Pamela Baricuatro signed an amendment to the existing SugBUCAS Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for BDH, expanding support and services to include not only the emergency room but also the hospital’s surgical capabilities.

This expansion introduces a collaborative model, bringing surgical teams and support staff from BDH and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center to work together. These operations, a milestone for BDH, demonstrated the partnership in action.

“We look forward to continuing this momentum, bringing safer, more accessible surgical care closer to our island communities, and building a stronger, more resilient hospital system over time,” said Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan.

A multi-disciplinary team was assembled for the procedures. The OB-GYN team was led by Dr. Gladys Hojas and Dr. Frances Mae Traces, while the general surgery team was headed by Provincial Board Member Dr. Stanley Caminero, assisted by Dr. Delvin Marquez and Dr. Jessa Mae Yuson. Dr. Jaime Bernadas provided anesthesiology services.

Critical nursing and operating room support was provided by a mix of SugBUCAS and BDH personnel, including scrub nurse Jed Anthony Eco from SugBUCAS, and circulating nurse Kyla Cañezo and PACU nurses from BDH. The hospital’s OR team, including Christopher Abello, Santiago May, and others, played a vital role in the success of the operations.

Dr. Catalan extended her gratitude to Dr. Gerard Aquino for his pivotal role in facilitating the SugBUCAS expansion.

“Your support in strengthening health services where they are needed most is deeply appreciated,” Dr. Catalan said.

This development represents a concrete step toward decentralizing specialized medical care in Cebu Province. For residents of Bantayan, it means reduced travel, lower costs, and faster access to essential surgical interventions.
