The Cebu Provincial Government is planning an environmental summit to map out solutions to the province’s pressing environmental challenges.

Assistant Provincial Administrator Aldwin Empaces said the summit will bring together stakeholders from national and local governments, advocacy groups, and the private sector to discuss key issues, including “future solutions in climate proofing.”

Tentatively set for the third week of February, the summit will also tackle waste-to-energy (WTE) solutions, following the tragedy at the Brgy. Binaliw landfill recently.

“I-address na gyud ang WTE, even those with reservations on how to move forward. It should not be nga dili nata mag-istorya. Kinahanglan ta mag-istorya ug kinahanglan ta og solusyon na,” Empaces said.

WTE technology converts non-recyclable waste—such as plastics, paper, and yard waste—into usable energy through processes including incineration, gasification, pyrolysis, and anaerobic digestion, reducing landfill volume while generating power.

On January 21, Governor Pamela Baricuatro met with Jonji Madara, president and CEO of MetPower Venture Partners, the third proponent to present a WTE solution for Cebu. Madara was joined by general manager Atty. Veerland Dongon, while the governor was advised by Atty. Aristotle “Totol” Batuhan and Empaces.

Empaces said that if a WTE project is pursued under the Baricuatro administration, it will most likely be located on the Capitol’s Balili property in the City of Naga, southern Cebu. /𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶, 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝑨𝑹𝑱
