The Capitol-run Bantayan District Hospital has started the year with a major boost to maternal and newborn health services following the establishment of a fully functional pathologic nursery, a development made possible by the arrival of a newly hired pediatrician, Dr. K. Barbas.
“This is an important milestone for our island hospital,” said Dr. Nikki Catalan, the Capitol’s Piso Public Health Consultant, in a Facebook post.
“Having a functioning pathologic nursery means that newborns requiring closer monitoring and specialized care can now be managed locally, reducing the need for urgent transfers and allowing families to stay closer to home during critical moments,” she added.
A pathologic nursery is a specialized area for newborns with detected illnesses or complications, distinct from the standard nursery. It serves newborns who are ill, premature, or have health conditions that require close medical attention. It is a high-acuity environment where medical specialists and health professionals provide treatment and continuous monitoring.
Dr. Catalan also acknowledged the leadership of Dr. James Najarro and the entire hospital team for their sustained commitment to improving healthcare services in the island, a leading tourism destination in Cebu.
The establishment of the pathologic nursery is part of the provincial government’s continuing efforts under the leadership of Governor Pamela Baricuatro to strengthen public health services, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. Improving maternal and newborn care remains a key priority as the province works toward more accessible, equitable, and responsive healthcare for all Cebuanos. |𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶
