French Ambassador to the Philippines Marie Fontanel paid a courtesy visit to Gov. Pamela Baricuatro at the Cebu Provincial Capitol today, December 17 to explore possible partnerships and collaborations in investment and tourism.

The ambassador, a known advocate of stronger French–Philippine relations, highlighted France’s continuing engagement with the Philippines in areas such as culture, energy, maritime security, and trade, as part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation.

Fontanel said that France, in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), could explore ways to support Cebu’s priority development projects, particularly the construction of dams to mitigate flooding and ensure sustainable water supply during dry months.

She noted that these initiatives, which have been identified as priority projects of the governor, may be pursued through joint French and Japanese funding proposals.

In the tourism sector, the ambassador encouraged the provincial government to further attract the European market, particularly French tourists, by offering competitive pricing.

Gov. Baricuatro assured the ambassador that Cebu offers more affordable tourism experiences that are comparable, if not superior, to those of neighboring destinations, adding that French tourists will always be welcome in the province.

As a sign of Cebu’s openness to French investors, the governor invited the ambassador, along with French businesses in the country, to an investment forum scheduled for early 2026. | CAPITOL PIO
