The Cebu Provincial Government has ramped up its leptospirosis prevention efforts amid the recent string of rains and flooding, distributing 445,874 prophylactic capsules to 27 local government units (LGUs) since November 4.

Leptospirosis, a serious bacterial infection commonly acquired through contact with floodwaters contaminated by animal urine, poses heightened risks to residents who wade through or clean up after floods.
“Providing timely prophylaxis is one of the ways the Province is helping reduce the chance of infection among exposed residents, alongside information drives and early consultation,” said Capitol public health consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan.
The latest wave of distribution covered four recently affected LGUs — Carcar City, Balamban, Dumanjug, and Barili — which received a combined 99,000 capsules:
Dumanjug – 30,000 capsules
Barili – 43,000 capsules
Carcar – 26,000 capsules
Balamban – 5,000 capsules
The Provincial Health Team facilitated the rapid turnover in response to requests from local officials reporting increased exposure risks in their communities.
Gov. Pamela Baricuatro emphasized that prevention remains Cebu’s strongest defense, noting that prophylaxis is intended for individuals with prolonged or repeated contact with floodwaters, including workers, commuters, and flood-affected families.

She also reminded the public that medication is only one layer of protection, stressing the importance of avoiding floodwater, using protective gear, and seeking early medical consultation for symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, or dark urine.
The Capitol continues to coordinate with LGUs to monitor cases, provide additional supplies as needed, and strengthen information campaigns.
The ongoing effort reflects the province’s commitment to proactive and community-centered public health measures, ensuring timely access to essential medical resources for high-risk residents across Cebu. | CAPITOL PIO
