The Province of Fujian in China is donating 30 modular houses to Cebu Province for residents whose homes were destroyed by recent calamities.

Chinese Consul General in Cebu Zhang Zhen, representing Fujian, signed the deed of donation, which Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro received during a brief ceremony at her Capitol office on November 25.

“This is sisterhood in action,” the Chinese Consul General told the Governor, referring to the sisterhood pact between Cebu and Fujian.

A modular house is a prefabricated home built in factory-made sections—called modules—and assembled on-site on a permanent foundation. These modules use the same materials and building techniques as traditional homes.

Once completed, a modular house is virtually indistinguishable from a conventional home in appearance, stability, and durability, said Vicente Lu, project coordinator and former president of the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Cebu Chapter.

Atty. Resty Arnaiz, chief of the Capitol’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), signed as witness to the donation alongside Lu. He said the modular houses will be shipped from Fujian in the coming days.

He added that the Capitol is still determining the beneficiaries, but they will be selected from among those whose homes were destroyed by the recent earthquake or typhoon that struck Cebu.
