As Tropical Depression Verbena approaches, threatening to cause flooding, Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan facilitated the delivery of 177,800 doses of prophylactic antibiotics to several areas in Metro Cebu today, Nov. 24.

The distribution included 115,200 doses sent to northern Cebu and an additional 62,600 capsules delivered to Talisay City following a request from its City Health Officer Dr. Rey Cesar Bautista to the Office of the Governor.

This proactive measure, ordered by Gov. Pamela Baricuatro, ensures that additional medication is readily available for residents. The supply is crucial for combating leptospirosis and other water-borne infections, which pose a major threat after floods.

Provincial health officials noted the need for additional antibiotic supplies in these local government units (LGUs) to protect residents with continued exposure to contaminated water, which may carry leptospirosis and other infectious diseases following the flooding from Typhoon Tino.

Among the LGUs in northern Cebu that received more supplies of antibiotics were Liloan (50,000 capsules), Consolacion (30,000), and Compostela (35,200).

The antibiotics were distributed immediately to barangays and rural health units within these LGUs for faster public access.

During the distribution in Compostela, barangay captains expressed their gratitude to Gov. Baricuatro for the assistance.

The Capitol continues to provide medical support to ensure the health and safety of Cebuanos, particularly in flood-prone areas.
