The provincial government delivered more than 40,000 capsules of antibiotic prophylaxis to the Talisay City Health Office and several of its barangays today, November 19, to help residents fend off the emerging threat of leptospirosis.

The move comes in response to a rising number of leptospirosis cases in the city following heavy flooding from  Typhoon Tino.

The barangays of Biasong, Tabunok, Lagtang, Jaclupan, San Isidro, Manipis, Dumlog, Poblacion, Tangke, and Cansojong received a total of 25,000 capsules. An additional 15,000 were delivered to the City Health Office for broader distribution.

Dr. Nikki Catalan, Capitol’s piso health consultant who facilitated the shipment, emphasized that providing the medication directly to the barangays ensures faster distribution and easier access for residents.

On Tuesday, personnel from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) conducted a house-to-house distribution in Barangay Dumlog, one of the city’s hardest-hit villages, providing 5,400 capsules to 540 residents.

This effort is part of Gov. Pamela Baricuatro’s multi-pronged response to prevent a leptospirosis outbreak after a spike in cases was detected across the province in the first two weeks of November.

According to the PHO, Talisay City alone has registered eight leptospirosis cases during that period.

From November 4 to 17, the PHO has distributed 57,000 capsules of antibiotics to local government units and Capitol-run hospitals province-wide.
