Gov. Pamela Baricuatro Pledges Respect for Press Freedom in Cebu

Journalists, often called “The Fourth Estate,” play a critical role in democratic checks and balances by challenging those in power.

Gov. Pamela Baricuatro values journalists’ work, recognizing their essential role even when reporting critically on her administration.

“I value the press not only as reporters, but as watchdogs, partners, and storytellers. You are the bridge between the government and the people. “And while the bridge can be shaky, especially with unfavorable news, it is one we cannot do without,” the governor said during Cebu Press Freedom Week (Sept. 20–27).

“Here in Cebu, under my watch, I want you to know that the press will always be valued and respected,”  she added.

Gov. Baricuatro served as guest of honor and administered the oath to new CFBJ officers at Cebu Parklane Hotel.

“Freedom of the press is a right and a responsibility. When exercised responsibly, it strengthens governance and pushes leaders to be more transparent and accountable,” she said.

The governor emphasized the media’s vital role, echoing Thomas Jefferson: she’d choose newspapers over a government any day.

CFBJ is composed of over a hundred legitimate reporters, cameramen, and photojournalists in Cebu. It has 12 beat assignments, including the Provincial Government, which holds a regular weekly press briefing with the governor.

Veteran journalist Arnold Bustamante of RMN Cebu was re-elected president of CFBJ, with Herty Lopez (SuperBalita) as vice president. Other officers include Morexette Erram (CDN Digital), secretary; Calvin Cordova (Manila Bulletin), treasurer; Ehda Dagooc (The Freeman), auditor; Kat Cacho (SunStar Cebu – Print) and Jessa Agua-Ylanan (Radyo Pilipinas Cebu – Broadcast), public information officers; Lloyd Suarez (dySS Super Radyo) and Chris Ligan (MyTV Cebu), sergeants-at-arms.
