Commuters from southern Cebu traveling to Cebu City can now disembark in front of USJ-R Basak Campus and CIT–University. This, after Gov. Pamela Baricuatro announced that Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has granted her request to ease the burden on students and their families.
The exemption comes amid the strict enforcement of Cebu City Ordinance 2214, a 16-year-old local law that prohibits provincial buses from loading or unloading along major city roads, restricting them up to the Cebu South Bus Terminal, earning the ire of the commuting public.
“I talked to Mayor Archival, pwedi ba pahunongon lang nato ang atong mga estudyante kay hasol kaayo for them and extra gasto ni para sa mga ginikanan,” the governor told the media in a Capitol briefing on September 17.
Violations of the ordinance carry penalties of up to ₱4,500, along with vehicle impoundment and license confiscation under the city’s “Discipline Zone” program.
Governor Baricuatro thanked Mayor Archival for understanding and granting her request. She said there is a need for designated bus stops to balance traffic management with the commuters’ welfare, adding that she will continue talks with the City Government to also address the concerns of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the commuting employees.
“I understand where they (Cebu City officials) are coming from. Dili ni sayon. That’s why we have to work it out with the City. I don’t want this to cause any friction between the City and the Province,” the governor said. |𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶
