CEBU CITY, CEBU – The Cebu Provincial Government is intensifying its efforts to safeguard the health of school children by partnering with Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) through the DAN-AG Program to conduct a comprehensive study on parasitic worm infections across the province.
The collaborative initiative aims to cover 6,000 public school students from at least 12 local government units (LGUs) in Cebu. This program marks a significant step toward improving healthcare services for children and addressing a common yet often overlooked health issue that can affect school performance, nutrition, and overall well-being.
Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Dr. Nikki Catalan met with CDU DAN-AG officials on Sept. 11, 2025, to discuss program implementation.

Expanding Research for Better Health Outcomes
Dr. Brian Denney said CDU earlier assessed three Mandaue barangays, providing baseline data for the province-wide study.
“The research will track parasitic worm prevalence while assessing children’s nutrition, hygiene, risks, and healthcare access,” Dr. Denney said.
The program will assess health service gaps to deliver evidence-based interventions for Cebu’s children, especially in vulnerable areas.
Focus on Vulnerable Communities
Twelve LGUs were chosen for high-risk populations, but Gov. Baricuatro stressed including remote areas like Malapascua to reach all children.
“Every Cebuano child deserves the chance to grow healthy and reach their full potential. Our focus is not just on the towns in the mainland but also on remote islands where access to healthcare is limited,” the governor said.
Dr. Catalan said Capitol will fund the program, with support from DOST and RAFI to expand and sustain it.
Data-Driven Interventions for Long-Term Impact
Through its partnership with CDU, Cebu aims to gather vital data to guide prevention and treatment of parasitic worm infections.
“This collaboration tailors programs to children’s needs, helping them stay healthy, excel in school, and break disease cycles,” Dr. Catalan said.
The initiative is part of Gov. Baricuatro’s healthcare reforms, including hospital upgrades, free services, and disease prevention.
Ensuring a Healthier Future for Cebuano Children
School-aged children are particularly vulnerable to parasitic worm infections, which can cause malnutrition, fatigue, and impaired cognitive development. Addressing these issues through research, education, and community-based interventions is crucial to safeguarding their health and academic potential.
Gov. Baricuatro expressed optimism that the program will serve as a model for other provinces, demonstrating how collaboration between government, academic institutions, and the community can effectively tackle public health challenges.
“Our children are the future of Cebu. By investing in their health today, we are securing a healthier, more prosperous tomorrow for the entire province,” the governor concluded.
