Cebu Capitol Intensifies Campaign to End Dengue Deaths by 2030

CEBU CITY, CEBU – In line with the global goal to eliminate dengue-related deaths by 2030, the Cebu Provincial Government is intensifying its efforts through public education, preventive measures, and active participation of Capitol employees. On September 11, 2025, staff gathered at the Capitol Social Hall for a seminar titled “Bite Back: Cebu’s United Front Against Dengue.”

The session emphasized the critical role of collective action in combating dengue, the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne disease in the world, which is now endemic in over 100 countries.

Leading the Fight

The seminar was led by Capt. Erica Tania Davillo, a Harvard-trained physician of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and chair of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Ad Hoc Committee on Dengue Advocacy.

Capt. Davillo stressed that while dengue has no cure, early detection, proper care, and prevention—like eliminating stagnant water, proper waste disposal, and using repellents—remain the best defense.

“This is not just a medical issue; it is a social responsibility. Everyone has a role to play, from government employees to residents in every barangay,” Capt. Davillo said.

Cebu’s Dengue Situation

Dr. Nikki Catalan said Cebu logged 3,640 of Central Visayas’ 7,567 dengue cases, urging early action and preparedness.

“Every day counts when dealing with dengue. Early detection and immediate medical attention can save lives,” Dr. Catalan said in a social media post, urging both government personnel and the public to take preventive measures seriously.

Capitol Employees Join the Frontline

Gov. Pamela Baricuatro thanked Capt. Davillo, PMA, and CMS for empowering Capitol employees in dengue prevention.

Gov. Baricuatro stressed that awareness and prevention save lives, urging Capitol staff to spread dengue lessons in their communities.

The seminar also highlighted the collaboration with Pocari Sweat, which supports dengue awareness programs and community health campaigns

Strengthening Cebu’s Fight Against Dengue

The Cebu Provincial Government’s campaign aligns with the World Health Organization’s goal to end deaths from dengue by 2030. It underscores the importance of education, community action, and timely medical intervention.

Dr. Catalan said Cebu’s health seminars, campaigns, and monitoring aim to prevent outbreaks and reduce deaths.

“Our strategy is to educate, detect early, and mobilize communities to eliminate mosquito breeding sites,” she said.

A Community-Wide Responsibility

Gov. Baricuatro stresses that dengue prevention is everyone’s duty, promoting vigilance and health practices to stop its spread.

With experts like Capt. Davillo guiding the way and Capitol employees acting as health advocates, Cebu is taking meaningful steps toward the goal of ending dengue deaths by 2030.
