Korean Ambassador Meets Cebu Governor to Strengthen Tourism and Community Ties

CEBU – The Republic of Korea’s ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Lee Sang-hwa, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Pamela Baricuatro at the Cebu Provincial Capitol on Thursday, September 4, 2025. The visit highlighted the growing partnership between Cebu and South Korea, especially in tourism, education, and community relations.

Accompanying Ambassador Lee were two members of his delegation, while Governor Baricuatro welcomed him with Provincial Administrator Ace Durano, Provincial Tourism OIC Rowena “Weng” Montecillo, and Provincial Information Officer Ainjeliz de la Torre-Orong.

Strengthening Cebu-Korea Ties

During the meeting, both leaders discussed the increasing presence of the South Korean community in Cebu. The discussions coincided with preparations for the 76th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and South Korea, which will be celebrated next month as Philippines-Korea Friendship Day.

Ambassador Lee expressed the importance of collaboration between the Cebu Provincial Government and the South Korean Embassy. “Cebu is a significant partner in strengthening cultural and economic exchanges. We aim to continue working closely with the Provincial Tourism Office and other local institutions to ensure our citizens in Cebu are well-supported,” he said.

The ambassador also highlighted the Embassy’s new partnership with the Philippine National Police Regional Office 7 (PNP-7). A dedicated hotline will soon be established to monitor the welfare of South Koreans living in Cebu, offering immediate assistance whenever necessary.

Cebu’s Vibrant Korean Community

Governor Baricuatro welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the value of the Korean community to Cebu’s growth. “This visit reaffirms our friendship with South Korea. We are proud to host a vibrant Korean community here in Cebu, and we will continue to provide support to ensure their safety and integration,” she said.

The Korean presence in Cebu spans tourists, students, investors, and long-term residents. The community has contributed significantly to sectors like tourism, education, and local business, boosting Cebu’s economy and enhancing cultural exchange.

“We are looking forward to deepening our partnership with South Korea in the years ahead, particularly in areas that benefit both our local communities and the Korean residents here,” Governor Baricuatro added.

Collaborative Opportunities in Tourism and Education

Both leaders recognized tourism and education as key areas of collaboration. Cebu’s thriving tourism industry has long attracted South Korean visitors, while educational partnerships have allowed more exchange opportunities between Cebuano institutions and South Korean schools.

Ambassador Lee pledged ongoing coordination to enhance tourism, safety, and cultural understanding in Cebu.

“These initiatives boost tourism, investments, and education benefiting both Filipinos and Koreans,” the ambassador said.

A Stronger Bilateral Relationship

The courtesy visit is seen as a reaffirmation of Cebu’s enduring partnership with South Korea. Both sides expressed commitment to continue working together in tourism, education, investment, and community welfare.

“The Korean community is part of Cebu’s family, and we will continue strengthening cultural and economic ties,” Gov. Baricuatro said.

Cebu attracts South Koreans as tourists, students, professionals, and investors, making this partnership key to its growth.
