The Cebu Provincial Government has formally recognized the indispensable role of the Department of Health’s (DOH) disease surveillance units in protecting public health and pledged to strengthen collaborative efforts to better serve all Cebuanos.
Dr. Nikki Catalan said, ‘Governor Baricuatro ensures that every Cebuano receives support, especially in healthcare.’

RESU Awards Highlight Excellence in Public Health
Dr. Catalan spoke for Gov. Baricuatro at the first Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) Awards on August 20, 2025.
She praised RESU and all participating healthcare facilities for their exemplary dedication to public health safety and preparedness. Their timely and accurate disease reporting enables local governments and health authorities to respond quickly to threats.
Dr. Catalan said this recognition honors the professionalism and dedication of frontline health workers.

Collaboration is Key to Effective Disease Monitoring
Dr. Catalan underscored that disease surveillance is a collective effort.
“This work cannot be done by one group alone. It requires collaboration—between national and local government, healthcare institutions, and communities,” she explained.
“Only by working hand in hand can we achieve our common goal of a healthier, safer, and more resilient Region VII.”
Through strong partnerships, Cebu ensures early detection, swift response, and prevention of health emergencies to protect communities.
Capitol Hospitals Earn Gold Recognition
All Capitol-run Provincial Hospitals received Gold Awards for disease surveillance, showcasing efficient health data collection.
Dr. Catalan highlighted that while the collection of data is commendable, the next crucial step is its utilization. Proper analysis and application of this information can inform healthcare planning, improve hospital services, and strengthen community health programs.
“These awards symbolize achievement and urge us to use data to improve Cebu’s healthcare,” she said, echoing Gov. Baricuatro’s vision.
