DANAO CITY, Cebu — The Cebu Provincial Government-led medical and surgical mission held at the Cebu Provincial Hospital (CPH) – Danao delivered a wide range of free health services on its opening day, including 23 major surgeries, 52 minor surgical procedures and more than 200 specialist consultations.
The first day of the two-day of the mission brought together government health workers, private hospitals, medical organizations and volunteers to provide services to patients who might otherwise face difficulty accessing specialized care.
Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan said that the mission was conducted in partnership with Chong Hua Hospital, the Cebu Medical Society, Cebu Provincial Hospital-Danao and other participating groups.
Among the major operations performed on the first day were seven laparoscopic cholecystectomies, five thyroid surgeries, seven hernia operations, two hemorrhoidectomies and two excisions.
Medical teams also carried out 52 minor surgeries, including cyst procedures and incision-and-drainage cases, as well as 10 arteriovenous fistula procedures, which are commonly performed to provide vascular access for patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Specialist teams attended to 225 consultations, including 140 in ophthalmology, 44 in internal medicine, 21 in surgery, 16 in pediatrics and four in obstetrics and gynecology.
Dental teams treated another 63 patients.
Diagnostic and screening services were also provided throughout the day, including 30 chest X-rays, 33 random blood sugar tests and 25 uric acid tests. HIV testing was conducted for 60 patients at CPH-Danao and 33 at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology facility in Danao.
Dr. Catalan said the volume of services delivered on the first day demonstrated what could be achieved when public hospitals, private institutions, professional organizations and volunteers work together.
She said that the medical-surgical mission also underscored the role of partnerships in bringing specialized medical and surgical care closer to Cebuano communities, particularly through coordinated efforts involving doctors, nurses, health workers and other volunteers.
Dr. Catalan thanked the CPH-Danao team, Chong Hua Hospital, the Cebu Medical Society and other participating partners for contributing personnel, expertise and resources to the undertaking.
The surgical mission is set to continue tomorrow, August 9, with major surgeries and arteriovenous fistula procedures scheduled as part of the major activities for the month-long celebration of the province’s 457th Founding Anniversary.
