Residents of the Camotes Islands now have greater access to specialized medical care after the Cebu Provincial Government expanded the roster of doctors at the Ricardo L. Maningo Memorial Hospital in San Francisco town.
Provincial Health Office officials said the district hospital now has 20 physicians, including specialists and resident doctors, reducing the need for patients to travel to mainland Cebu for specialized care.
The hospital’s medical staff is composed of two surgeons, including the chief of hospital, two anesthesiologists, one obstetrician-gynecologist, two pediatricians, four internal medicine specialists, and nine resident doctors.
When Gov. Pamela Baricuatro assumed office last year, one of the most pressing problems she identified was the shortage of doctors and nurses, along with inadequate medical supplies in Capitol-run hospitals.
The increase in medical personnel fulfills Gov. Baricuatro’s commitment to fix the province’s healthcare system and improve access to quality medical services, particularly in geographically isolated island communities.
Gov. Baricuatro has tasked Capitol Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan to oversee the expansion and upgrade in coordination with Ricardo L. Maningo Memorial Hospital chief Dr. Rene Macario S. Borromeo.
Health officials said more upgrades are planned for the Camotes hospital to enable it to provide a wider range of specialized healthcare services.
