The Cebu Provincial Government has begun delivering new autoclaves to its hospitals, with the first units arriving at Pinamungajan District Hospital and Barili District Hospital as part of a province-wide equipment upgrade.
The rollout covers all 16 Capitol-run hospitals, replacing aging sterilization equipment that had become prone to breakdowns or was no longer operational.
“Many of our hospitals have been working with autoclaves that are already outdated, frequently malfunctioning, or no longer operational. This affects their ability to safely and efficiently sterilize the instruments needed for daily patient care,” Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan said.
Catalan has been tasked by Gov. Pamela Baricuatro to oversee the upgrades and improvements at Capitol-run hospitals across the province.
An autoclave uses high-pressure steam and heat to sterilize surgical instruments and reusable medical equipment, eliminating bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms that may remain after routine cleaning.
The process is considered essential in preventing hospital-acquired infections and ensuring patient safety during surgeries, deliveries, and emergency procedures.
The Provincial Health Office will distribute 100-liter autoclaves to its 10 infirmaries, while four Level 1 hospitals and two Level 2 hospitals will each receive 450-liter units to meet higher demand for surgical and medical services.

The larger-capacity machines are intended to support hospitals that handle more operations, deliveries, and other procedures requiring a steady supply of sterile instruments.
“Patient safety begins long before a procedure starts. It begins with clean, properly sterilized instruments,” Catalan said.
Beyond the delivery of the equipment, Catalan pointed out that installation, testing, staff training, preventive maintenance, and a reliable supply of sterilization materials will be prioritized to keep the machines operational.
The acquisition is part of the Capitol’s continuing effort to modernize healthcare services across its hospital network by addressing long-standing equipment gaps and improving infection prevention standards.
