Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro is pushing to make Cebu the country’s ‘corn capital” while reviving the province’s once-thriving mango plantation industry, with Department of Agriculture (DA) officials expressing support for the initiatives during a visit to the Capitol on Friday, July 24.
The governor discussed these priorities with DA Assistant Secretaries Daniel Alfonso Atayde and Brando Aguilera, and Undersecretary Arrey Perez, who were in Cebu to inspect the proposed site of the Cebu Mega Food Hub in the City of Naga.
She said she aims to further develop Cebu’s corn industry, noting that it already has an established market among feed producers. Former sugarcane lands in northern Cebu are being eyed for conversion to corn production, while additional areas in southern and western Cebu have also been identified for cultivation.
She also seeks to restore Cebu’s prominence in mango production, citing the province’s global reputation for its dried mangoes.
DA Regional Executive Director Angel Enriquez assured the governor that the regional office is ready to extend the assistance needed to bring her vision to fruition.
MEGA FOOD HUB
The Cebu Mega Food Hub, the first major facility of its kind outside Luzon, is expected to be built on a 45-hectare portion of the Balili Estate in the City of Naga, with an initial funding allocation of P1 billion. The site was selected for its strategic location near farming communities in southern Cebu.
The facility will include cold storage facilities to address the region’s shortage of storage capacity and reduce post-harvest losses. It is also envisioned to serve as a central hub for food consolidation, processing, storage, and distribution while linking local farmers directly with buyers to help lower food prices and ease inflationary pressures. /𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶, 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝑨𝑹𝑱
