Residents of Bantayan Island can now undergo some surgical procedures at Bantayan District Hospital, sparing them the trip to mainland Cebu after the hospital’s operating room became fully operational.

The hospital has already completed eight surgical procedures in three days using newly delivered equipment, a milestone that expands access to surgical care for one of Cebu’s island communities.

“This is an important milestone for the hospital and the island, demonstrating its growing ability to respond to urgent surgical cases without immediately requiring patients to travel to the mainland,” Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan said.

Catalan has been tasked by Gov. Pamela Baricuatro to oversee reforms across Capitol-run hospitals as part of the administration’s commitment to deliver on the governor’s promise to improve public healthcare.

Last Thursday, July 23, surgeon Dr. Delvin Marquez performed five minor procedures: the excision of a forehead mass, the excision of a left foot mass, and three wound debridement procedures for admitted patients.

A day later, the hospital achieved another first by successfully performing its first emergency, or STAT, appendectomy. The operation was led by Dr. Marquez, with Dr. Pascual Gongon as anesthesiologist and Dr. Jochico as first assistant.

The hospital also completed a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure on the same day. It was performed by obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Anna Maureen Sios-e, with Dr. Gongon providing anesthesia.

On July 25, the surgical team successfully performed a mesh hernioplasty, with Dr. Marquez as surgeon, Dr. Gongon as anesthesiologist, and Dr. Deco Tagadan as first assistant.
