MINGLANILLA, Cebu — The Cebu Provincial Government has started implementing at least P60.9 million worth of river control and drainage projects in Barangay Calajo-an to address the recurring flooding that has long affected residents and damaged roads in the area for years.
Gov. Pamela Baricuatro on Wednesday, July 22, joined Acting Mayor Lheslen Enad and Acting Vice Mayor Joe Romulus Laput in leading the groundbreaking of two drainage and river control projects in the barangay to bolster local disaster resilience and climate-adaptive infrastructure.
The larger project, worth P49.4 million, involves the construction of an 812-meter drainage system in Purok Bayabas that will extend through the flood-prone areas of Purok Mangga to Purok Caimetohan.
Scheduled for completion in July 2027, the project is expected to improve the flow of floodwaters toward the sea.
PUROK MACOPA DRAINAGE
A second project in Purok Macopa consists of a 198-meter drainage system with river control works extending to Purok Kapayasan. Funded by the Capitol with P11.4 million, the project is expected to be completed at an earlier date in January 2027.
For years, the absence of an adequate drainage system has caused persistent flooding in the barangay, resulting in cracked roads and hardships for nearby communities during heavy rains.
GOV. PAM: ‘AYAW KAIKOG’
Gov. Baricuatro assured municipal and barangay officials that the provincial government remains ready to augment local government initiatives whenever assistance is needed.
“Ayaw lang mo kaikog mohangyo, mosulti unsay inyong mga kinahanglan. Kon unsay among matabang, amo gyod na ihatag kay mao manay trabaho sa provincial government,” the governor said.
Acting Mayor Lheslen Enad said she appreciates Gov. Pamela Baricuatro’s willingness to listen to local officials, adding that the governor has made her feel welcomed and supported rather than intimidated.
“Pasalamat gyod ta ni Gov. nga atong hunghong iya gyod paminawon,” the acting mayor said, addressing the barangay captains and municipal officials present. | CAPITOL PIO
