Clean Air Asia held a discussion at the Cebu Provincial Capitol on Wednesday on the health impacts of air pollution and the benefits of adopting stronger emission standards.
The international non-government organization promotes science-based policies and capacity-building initiatives to help cities, regional leaders and national government agencies reduce air pollution and its impact on public health.
Everlyn Tamayo, Science Lead for Air Quality and Climate Change at Clean Air Asia, said air pollution is a public health issue that requires action from all sectors.
“Ang usapin po ng air pollution di lang siya sa environment office pero sa lahat po ng humihinga. Ang health office, policy makers, yung youth and elderly so lahat po siya. Andito lang po kami para simulan yung action but ultimately it depends on the people of Cebu kung anong direksyon po ang tatahakin,” Tamayo said.
Tamayo and her team also met with Cebu Provincial Piso Health Consultant Dr. Elisse “Nikki” Catalan on Tuesday evening to discuss potential air pollution hotspots in parts of Toledo City and the City of Naga, where 32 schools and health facilities are located.
Clean Air Asia said it hopes to work with the Cebu Provincial Government, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the private sector to strengthen public awareness on air pollution and advance coordinated measures for cleaner air, healthier communities, and fewer pollution-related illnesses.
