In a move to strengthen citizen participation in local governance and reinforce partnerships between government and the civil society sector, the Cebu Provincial Government hosted the Participatory Governance Summit at a hotel in Cebu City.

The summit, which gathered more than 2,000 representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs), people’s organizations (POs), non-government organizations (NGOs), and business groups, aims to identify best practices, address challenges, and draw lessons on participatory governance.

Co-organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Cebu and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), the July 14 summit also sought to enhance the knowledge and capabilities of participants in advancing participatory governance and nation-building.

In his opening remarks, Provincial Administrator Atty. Ace Durano said people’s participation is at the heart of the administration of People’s Governor Pamela Baricuatro.

“This administration understands that the government works best when it listens, when the people’s voices are heard and taken into consideration in the blueprint for policy direction, when the people’s insights are driving decisions, and the community is co-creating solutions,” Atty. Durano said.

The summit also underscored the Provincial Government’s commitment to institutionalizing participatory governance by providing CSOs and other stakeholders with a platform to collaborate, share best practices, and strengthen their role in policy formulation and local development.

Present during the event were DILG-7 Regional Director Leocadio Trovela; municipal mayors led by League of the Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP)-Cebu Chapter President and Cordova Mayor Cesar Suan; and Provincial Board Members Kerrie Keane Shimura and Paz Rozgoni.

Among the resource speakers were Trovela; Eunice Gayle Tanilon of the People’s Budget Coalition; Naval, Biliran Mayor Gretchen Espina; Dennis Gonzaga of the Naga City People’s Council; and Rechie Tugawi of the Office of the Pasig City Mayor, among others. /𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶, 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝑱𝑳𝑷
