The Cebu Provincial Health Office (PHO) and the Barili Rural Health Unit (RHU) intensified dengue response measures in Barangay Pangpang on Friday, July 10, after the village recorded 19 dengue cases over the past four weeks, including the death of a three-year-old child.
The clustering of cases prompted immediate intervention to curb ongoing local transmission.
Records showed that two patients were recently admitted to Barili District Hospital, while the three-year-old child died on June 20.
The response included health education campaigns, community clean-up drives, an entomological survey to identify mosquito breeding sites, and misting operations in affected households and a nearby school.
The PHO also trained barangay tanods on the proper operation of manual and automatic misting machines and distributed NS1 dengue test kits, personal protective equipment, mosquito nets, larvicidal sachets, and chemicals for misting to support the local response.
Health workers said the activity revealed gaps in residents’ awareness of dengue warning signs and symptoms, as well as limited participation in community clean-up and prevention efforts.

The PHO urged residents to observe the Department of Health’s “4S Kontra Dengue” strategy: search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, secure self-protection against mosquito bites, seek early medical consultation when symptoms appear, and support fogging or misting only in identified hotspot areas.
Officials stressed that misting is only a supplemental control measure and that regularly removing stagnant water and other mosquito breeding sites remains the most effective way to prevent dengue.
The PHO, RHU, and barangay officials will continue coordinating on the results of the entomological survey, sustain health education and clean-up activities, and conduct follow-up misting every two weeks based on the assessment of affected areas. Dengue prevention requires consistent community participation, not only during outbreaks.
