The Cebu Provincial Health Office (PHO) has stepped up its preparedness measures following the ashfall from Kanlaon Volcano, warning that fine volcanic ash poses health risks, particularly to vulnerable sectors.

PHO Chief Dr. Sheila Shy Faciol said her office has been coordinating with municipal and city health offices, particularly in western Cebu, to ensure a swift response when the need arises. She said fine volcanic ash can be inhaled deep into the lungs.

Faciol warned that children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and people with preexisting respiratory conditions are the most vulnerable to ash-related health problems.

In response to Gov. Pamela Baricuatro’s order, the PHO has directed district and provincial hospitals to prepare for a possible increase in patients with acute respiratory symptoms. Hospitals in Balamban, Pinamungahan, Barili, and Carcar City have been placed on alert.

The provincial government has begun the emergency procurement of face masks. An initial 6,000 N95 masks will be distributed to affected local government units, with additional supplies expected to arrive in the coming days.
