Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro on Saturday, July 4, led the groundbreaking ceremony for an eco-friendly sewage treatment plant (STP) at Oslob District Hospital, a P8.4-million project aimed at improving wastewater management and environmental sustainability in the provincial health facility.
Funded by the Cebu Provincial Government, the facility will treat wastewater generated by the hospital before it is reused for other purposes, helping ensure proper sanitation while reducing the hospital’s environmental impact.
Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan said a sewage treatment plant is a critical component of any healthcare facility, adding that hospitals produce wastewater daily that must be treated before being discharged into the environment.
“A sewage treatment plant may not sound exciting, but for a hospital, it is basic, essential and non-negotiable,” Dr. Catalan said.
She said the project will strengthen patient safety, infection prevention, sanitation, environmental compliance and the protection of surrounding communities.
Dr. Catalan added that support infrastructure such as sewage treatment systems should have been prioritized long ago, but the provincial government is now addressing these essential needs.
The Oslob project is one of eight sewage treatment plants currently under construction in provincial hospitals across Cebu. Similar facilities are being built in Carcar, Argao, Bantayan, Minglanilla, Pinamungajan, Camotes and Tuburan.
The Oslob STP is the first among the eight projects whose groundbreaking ceremony was personally attended by Gov. Baricuatro.
Aside from the sewage treatment facility, Oslob District Hospital is also undergoing other infrastructure improvements, including the upgrading of its emergency room, as part of the provincial government’s continuing efforts to enhance public healthcare services across Cebu. /𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶, 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝑭𝑬, 𝑱𝑳𝑷
