Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro has expressed her full support for the Department of Health’s (DOH) Proteksyon Para Sa Altapresyon (PPSA) program, reinforcing the province’s commitment to strengthening hypertension prevention and control.
She conveyed her support to DOH Disease Prevention and Control Bureau Director Dr. Adriano Suba-an and World Health Organization (WHO) Country Head Dr. Eunyoung Ko during their visit to the Capitol on June 30.
“I support you one hundred percent,” Gov. Baricuatro said, adding that Cebuanos badly need better access to healthcare services which has been neglected for years.
She also pledged to use her extensive social media following to encourage Cebuanos to pay closer attention to their cardiovascular health.
Also present during the meeting were Provincial Health Officer Dr. Sheila Faciol and WHO Technical Officer Rhaj Santos.
PROGRAM LAUNCHED
Dr. Suba-an said the PPSA program was launched in Cebu with the goal of making the province a leading implementer of the campaign in Central Visayas, with technical support from the WHO.
“In the Philippines, the number one cause of mortality is non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases; and one contributing factor is dili ma-control and blood pressure, hypertension, nga pwedi man unta ni malikayan, pwedi man ni mapaubos nato through lifestyle modification and sa tambal,” he said.
TARGETS
Under the program, health workers and local government units will strengthen blood pressure screening, improve access to medicines and treatment, promote healthy lifestyles, and ensure regular monitoring of patients with hypertension.
For Cebu Province, Suba-an said the program aims to screen 1.5 million Cebuanos, diagnose 250,000 individuals with hypertension, provide medication to 200,000 patients, and achieve controlled blood pressure among 161,000 Cebuanos.
He said that if these targets are achieved over five years, the program could prevent 3,000 strokes, ensure the management of 1,500 hypertension cases, and avert 700 deaths annually.
