𝟒.𝟐𝐓 𝐒𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐒 𝐂𝐄𝐁𝐔 𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐎𝐋-𝐋𝐄𝐃 𝐄𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐇 𝐃𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐄
The Cebu Provincial Government, together with its partner organizations and local government units (LGUs), planted 4,200 fruit-bearing and mangrove seedlings across five LGUs during its province-wide tree growing campaign in celebration of this year’s Environment Month.
The initiative, held from June 24 to 27, mobilized about 280 volunteers, LGUs, people’s organizations, government agencies and private partners in support of the province’s environmental protection and climate resilience efforts under the leadership of Governor Pamela Baricuatro.
Tree-growing activities were conducted in Tuburan on June 24; Talisay City and Naga City on June 25, coinciding with Arbor Day; Dalaguete on June 26; and San Fernando on June 27.
The campaign was organized by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), in partnership with Municipal and City Environment and Natural Resources Offices (MENROs/CENROs). Preparations included consultations with local environment officers and permit holders to identify suitable areas for tree growing and mangrove rehabilitation under Provincial Ordinance No. 2016-21.
Farmers and community members welcomed the initiative, citing both its environmental and livelihood benefits.
The Jaclupan Farmers Association in Talisay City received fruit-bearing seedlings, including guyabano, lanzones and rambutan, for planting in its demonstration farm. Association Vice President Ponciano Silva said the project would benefit local farmers and pledged to ensure the trees are properly maintained. He also added that the group had previously received tilapia fingerlings from the Provincial Government, a manifestation of the Capitol’s continuing support for farming communities.
In Barangay Cawayan, Dalaguete, Councilman Felix Villahermosa thanked the Provincial Government for bringing mangrove rehabilitation efforts to the community, saying the trees will help protect coastal areas from storms and strengthen climate resilience.
Despite heavy rains, members of the San Isidro Farmers and Fisherfolks Association in San Fernando participated in the mangrove planting activity, including parents who brought their children.
Rowena Fernandez, a person with disability, said the mangrove ecosystem provides food and livelihood for their family and future generations.
The activity was supported by Juga Builders, Mabuhay Cement, PREMCO, Nokk Quarrying, Quirante Construction Corp. and Bengcolita Enterprises, along with representatives from the Office of Provincial Board Member Julius Anthony Corominas and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Following the successful rollout, similar tree-growing and mangrove rehabilitation activities will be organized by the Cebu Provincial Government in other local government units as part of its long-term strategy to protect ecosystems, reduce disaster risks and strengthen community resilience against climate change. /𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶
