𝗚𝗼𝘃. 𝗣𝗮𝗺: 𝗞𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
Gov. Pamela Baricuatro on Wednesday assured the public that the planned rehabilitation of Kawasan Falls in Badian would focus on environmental restoration and visitor safety, with no hotels or other commercial structures to be built in the area.
Speaking at her weekly press briefing, the governor said the ₱110-million assistance the Capitol turned over to the Municipality of Badian would be used primarily to preserve the natural features of Kawasan Falls and ensure compliance with environmental laws, rejecting proposals that could alter the site’s ecological character.
Last week, Gov. Baricuatro inspected Kawasan before handing over the ₱110-million check to Mayor Jerome Librando.
The governor said the rehabilitation would be carried out in phases to allow tourism activities to continue while work is ongoing.
One of the project’s components is the restoration of sections of the falls and the clearing of large rocks and boulders that were washed into the river system by previous typhoons.
Instead of commercial facilities, the province is looking at basic improvements for visitors, including additional waste bins and better-maintained comfort rooms along the eco-trails.
Aside from Kawasan, Badian is also widely recognized as the home of canyoneering in Cebu, drawing local and foreign visitors to the town for the popular adventure route that ends at the falls.
The provincial government and the Badian local government have already laid out the project’s framework. Once the final plans are completed, rehabilitation work is expected to begin and run for about 12 months.
