The Cebu Provincial Government will begin construction next year of what is expected to be the first Halal slaughterhouse in the Visayas.

The project, under the administration of Governor Pamela Baricuatro, is being undertaken in coordination with the Provincial Veterinarian Office and several national government agencies.

Dr. Mary Rose Bahian Vincoy, head of the Provincial Veterinarian Office, said the facility was among the commitments made by the governor to the province’s Muslim community.

The Halal slaughterhouse will be a regulated facility that adheres to hygiene standards, animal welfare protocols, modern food safety practices and strict Islamic dietary laws.

“We’re working with different national government agencies and the National Commission for Muslim Filipinos to realize all of this social preparation so that by next year, construction na gyud siya,” Vincoy said.

Since the Visayas has no localized Halal slaughterhouse, businesses and consumers currently rely on facilities located in Mindanao.

Once completed, the facility is also expected to attract tourism, global conventions and summits especially from Muslim-dominated countries in Middle-East and South East Asia.

Last April, Department of Tourism (DOT) Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar met with Gov. Baricuatro to discuss areas of collaboration, including the promotion of Halal tourism.
