Three nurses from the Capitol-run Juan B. Dosado Memorial Hospital in Sogod were personally commended by Gov. Pam Baricuatro as healthcare heroes for their expert and timely response in assisting the safe delivery of a baby aboard a passenger bus.
During a recognition ceremony on June 8, Gov. Baricuatro awarded medals to Nurses Marjorie Joe Casinillo and siblings John Paolo and Lou Dominic de Dios. She also extended a personal donation from her private fund as a gesture of gratitude for their lifesaving efforts.
The governor further announced that Casinillo would be prioritized in the next round of regularization for Capitol healthcare workers, citing her eight years of service as a job-order employee.
ACTIVE LABOR ABOARD A BUS
The three nurses responded to an emergency involving a 31-year-old pregnant woman who went into active labor while traveling on a bus from Cebu City to Tabogon at around 7:30 a.m. that day.
The bus driver acted quickly and stopped in front of the hospital, allowing the nurses to immediately board the vehicle and provide emergency medical assistance.
“Pagtungtong nako sa bus, mao gyud paggawas sa bata, nasawo sa papa,” said Casinillo, the most senior among the three nurses.
Casinillo said the newborn initially did not cry and had already turned blue after becoming entangled in its umbilical cord wrapped twice around the neck. The nurses immediately untangled and safely cut the cord, helping stabilize the child.
“Timing gyud kaayo mo. You just saved a life,” the governor told the nurses.
HOSPITAL CARE PROVIDED
According to Dr. Jackielyn Cabrera, chief of the hospital, the mother and child were immediately brought into the facility following the delivery. The mother underwent the necessary post-delivery procedure for the removal of the placenta, while the newborn received a complete assessment and routine interventions, including Vitamin K and Hepatitis B vaccinations.
Both mother and child were later able to return safely to their home in Tabogon.
The de Dios siblings, meanwhile, have been serving at the hospital for less than a year.
Gov.
